mediate configuration

mediate may require a minor amount of configuration after installation, depending on your particular PC. Each of these configuration tasks are described below.

Configuring media locations

By default, mediate looks for media files stored in "My Music", "My Videos" and "My Pictures" folders located under "My Documents" for the user that was logged on when mediate was installed. If you have media files stored in other locations you will need to run mediate media manager (mmm) using the icon in the @home media folder of the Start menu.

The mmm program is split into three tabs for music, video and pictures corresponding to the menu options in mediate with the same names. Simply select the tab you require and then either drag and drop a folder from Windows Explorer, or use the toolbar buttons to add an appropriate media folder.

Note that you don't need to add sub-folders or individual media items - mediate will automatically detect media files anywhere inside the folders you specify. If required, you can treat the folder as a "virtual folder" which means mediate will display a folder named e.g. "TV shows" which links to the appropriate directory on your PC. It is even possible to give multiple physical locations the same virtual folder name and have these grouped together as one virtual folder - ideal if you have files split across several drives or computers.

Detailed instructions for using mmm are included in the mediate user guide.

Missing media files

If you have configured media folders using mmm as described above, but you are not seeing the media files in mediate that you expect, try some of the suggestions below.

If you are not seeing any files for a particular folder:

  • If mediate was already running when changing folders in mmm, restart mediate
  • Ensure that the folder has been specified correctly in mmm (check folder name carefully)
  • Ensure the currently logged on user has permission to read files in the folder
  • Ensure the folder contains media of the correct type - music, video and picture menus in mediate filter appropriate media types

If you are not seeing any files in a remote folder (on another computer):

  • Ensure your network connection is working correctly (particularly wireless networks)
  • Ensure the folder is connected - you may need to specify a user name and password to setup the connection

If you are only seeing some files for a particular folder:

  • Check that the missing files are not hidden - use Windows Explorer to unhide files
  • Check that the file types are configured for use within mediate

Windows Explorer is useful for checking connections to other computers using network shares, or for testing file permissions.
